Lake O Salmon and Trout using only Torpedo Divers

Here's what canadiancrew had to say about Torpedo Divers™:

I had the pleasure of meeting up with Matthew Sawrie (Vanselena) for some Salmon fishing on the Lake Ontario. Matt was looking for someone to catch some nice fish so he could capture the use of the torpedo diver on video. This arrangement struck my fancy and the day paid off for both of us as he got some nice video and I got to to reel in some very nice Kings and Coho. So we set out on April 24th shortly after 6:00 AM from the South Shore near Port Weller. Mathew is very excited with his new product and is so convinced that he has removed and sold his down riggers. I was excited and anticipating seeing how this would work and perform. I was impressed. The ease of and time to deploy tackle was great. We had 2 of us on the boat so we put out a 4 rod spread. Two rods where put out the back corners where the rigger rods normally go and two more rods where put out the side using small planner boards. On the planner rods we let the line out on the line counter reel to get the Torpedo down to the desired depth and then attached the board and then letting out more line to get the boards the desired distance away from the boat.

When the fish is hooked more of the advantages to the Torpedo really start. Using Torpedo's in place of the rigger rod there is no slack line to be taken up there is no drag on the line like there is with dipsy's and other divers. It is a very great feeling on the rod with lots of feel for all the shakers. From the big jerks of the Chinook to the tight rapid shaking of the Coho.

Apparently this was the Torpedo's debut for Salmon and Trout and it certainly was exciting. Previous tests where in salt water. Some highlights as Matt stated were having the Torpedo 24 feet below the boat with a 6 foot lead to the lure and having a 15lb salmon smack that spoon. That fish fought hard but never went further then 40 feet away, pure energy, head shaking, jumping, back and forth battle, what a fight! So much fighting power at that short distance was just awesome! I really look forward to hooking up on some rainbows this way. Also hooking them this close to the boat indicates they where not boat shy and the stealth features of the Torpedo driver are and advantage.

I told Matthew it was likely going to take some time to convince guys not to use the riggers but I know my wife will be even more impressed than I. She does not have the strength to pull in the dipsy's or even trying to get the rods out of the holders when the diver's have not been tripped so I usually have to do all the man handling for her. With the Torpedo's I feel quite confident she will be able to handle her own rods without my assistance. If you fishing the rivers with one rod per person you could hold the rod and not need rod holders and get the feel of a hookup that you miss with rod holders. We ended the day with 2 Kings 12LB and 15LB and a 2 1/2 LB Coho.

See the South Shore reports for Port D April 23 and 24th for Pictures and details on the fish.
